CHAMP Education Dog Moe, Public Access Service Dog Finders, and Service Dog-in-Training Lulu at the 2008 Assistive Technology Consumer Fair in St. Louis on May 12th. The fair featured demonstrations, service organizations, as well as companies and devices for a variety of disabilities.
CHAMP Education Dogs and Service Dogs demonstrated "typical" service dog skills such as retrieving a variety of items, placing trash in a trash can or laundry in a laundry basket, assisting with the removal of clothing (gloves), and retrieving an emergency "911" phone when needed. Finders demonstrated turning light switches off and on, opening cabinet doors, and other skills. Lulu... well, Lulu is still a baby. :) She practiced good manners and positioning skills, as well as staying focused on her handler amidst all the activities.
CHAMP staff and volunteers handling service dogs-in-training or therapy dogs visited with fair-goers Monday and Tuesday. It was a fun time, and a great opportunity to view the many different technologies that are available to people with disabilities.
