From the Inside Out

From The Inside Out

When C.H.A.M.P. Assistance Dogs, Inc. partnered with the Missouri Department of Corrections to bring its program here, little did we know that another partnership would be formed. The one between offender and dog.

This has been so much more than just a job, it’s been a life changing event for all of us. C.H.A.M.P., Inc. has put the “purpose” back in our lives. The opportunity they have given us and the work we are doing will hopefully not only touch the lives of others, but also add joy and enhancement to them. C.H.A.M.P., Inc. has entrusted us with the care and training of their dogs. Although we know going in that these dogs were never meant for us to keep, we have been blessed by our time together. The changes the dogs have made in our lives is evident everyday. The love they have shown us and the love we’ve been able to return is a priceless gift that C.H.A.M.P., Inc. has given us.

Those of us in the C.H.A.M.P. Assistance Dogs, Inc. program here at WERDCC have all hoped for a way to be able to give something back to the community we once took from. C.H.A.M.P., Inc. is the fulfillment of that hope. Through the C.H.A.M.P., Inc. program here a door has been opened for us. A revolving door of special people and animals that come in and spend some time with us, and it is our hope that through our combined efforts of love and training that these dogs will take a small part of us with them when they leave. C.H.A.M.P., Inc. is creating a better tomorrow for us and for every life these special canines touch.

All of us agree that Mary Ruth, Director of Training for C.H.A.M.P., Inc., may have summed up our feelings best when she said that in essence what we are giving to their clients is the gift we can’t give ourselves: the gift of freedom.
