Eligibility Requirements

Who Can Apply?

Every CHAMP Assistance Dog placement is thoughtfully matched to ensure the best possible partnership for both the individual and the dog. Our eligibility requirements help determine readiness, support needs, and the ability to successfully work with and care for an Assistance Dog.

Physical Disability Requirement

Applicants must have a physical disability other than loss of vision or loss of hearing.

Local Service Area

Applicants must live within 50 miles of our Maryland Heights, Missouri office.

Training Commitment

Applicants must be willing to participate in placement training and ongoing support sessions.

Stable Home Environment

Applicants should have stability in their home life and cannot add new pets during the application process or for one year following placement.

Partnership Responsibilities

A successful partnership requires ongoing commitment. Recipients and caregivers must be able to meet the dogs physical, emotional and financial needs throughout the partnership.

Applicants must:

  • Participate in follow-up contact with CHAMP
  • Complete additional training as needed
  • Provide regular opportunities for the dog to perform trained skills
  • Ensure caregivers are dependable and available for training when applicable
  • Maintain the dog’s health, safety and daily care needs

Age Requirements

Applications may be submitted before the minimum age requirement is met.

Home Requirements

To help our dogs succeed, CHAMP generally requires:

  • A physically fenced yard (electronic fencing is not accepted in most cases)
  • Safe indoor and outdoor living conditions
  • A consistent routine and support system
  • Opportunities for the dog to actively use its trained skills

Placement Limitations

To ensure we deliver the highest quality training and support, there are some types of placements that we do not currently offer. CHAMP Assistance Dogs does not currently place:

  • Seizure Alert Dogs
  • Diabetic Alert Dogs
  • Dogs for tethering purposes
  • Dogs for protection purposes
